Dear Anna,
I believe
very strongly in a woman's right to self defense and I would like
to purchase a handgun on my 21st birthday for that reason. My
mom says that I would be safer if I bought a Taser gun instead.
What do you think?

Good for you, being so bright... but your mom may need to hear
a little seldom-heard but much-needed wisdom -- for starters,
that in over 9 out of 10 defensive uses of a gun, shots are never
fired. That's right, the majority of predators flee from the mere
sight of a gun; self-defense at a comfortable distance. Would
your mom really prefer you having to wait for a potential attacker
to be right next to you before you can protect yourself? Tell
her that such situations are not the time to reach out and touch
someone.

Vermont and I planning on driving to visit my daughter who lives
near Sacramento, California. I will be taking my Colt .45 with

to ensure that I travel with my firearm legally?

Preparing to answer your question made me realize how far we have
come from the original boundaries on the right of self-defense,
i.e. none. The Founding Fathers would be unamused. As a Vermonter
(lucky lady!), you'll probably be horrified.
