Banning Guns One City at A Time
by Jennifer Freeman

In the wake of two NYPD shooting deaths, New York City's Republican Mayor Bloomberg has vowed to crack down on illegal firearm sales across the country. "We will take our message to Albany, to Washington and to every capitol of every state that permits guns to flow freely across its borders," said Bloomberg.

The firearm used to kill Detective Stewart was stolen in Florida by the suspect pictured in the top-right photo. The suspect was driving a vehicle with stolen New Jersey license plates, had previously committed armed robbery and fired on another police officer. Mayor Bloomberg, in typical anti-gun fashion, refuses to acknowledge that New York City's draconian handgun laws attracts criminals to his city as most law-abiding citizens in NYC are unarmed.

Although the firearm used by Allan Cameron was stolen from Florida, it is unclear whether it was stolen by the suspect. If the firearm was purchased illegally by the suspect, it is not clear whether the transaction took place in Florida, New Jersey, New York, or elsewhere. Surely Mayor Bloomberg is not suggesting that Governor Bush of Florida is responsible for the acts of Allan Cameron?

Mayor Bloomberg claims that there are states that permit "guns to flow freely across its borders." Perhaps Republican Mayor Bloomberg would prefer that every plane, train, and automobile be searched thoroughly at state checkpoints to ensure the disarmament of law-abiding citizens with firearms. Perhaps he believes that in doing so, people like Allan Cameron will magically become contributing members of society.

Blaming other states for the repercussions citizen disarmament is not a new tactic. In fact, the City of Boston blames its violent crime on the State of New Hampshire. The City of Toronto, Canada blames its crime on the United States. And now the City of New York is blaming its crime on the States of Florida and Georgia. The claim is the same in every case -- the right of citizens to own firearms in neighboring cities increases crime in anti-gun areas. In fact, the opposite is true.

Criminals seek anti-gun communities to commit their crimes because they know their chances of success are much higher. Criminals have no fear of unarmed, pacifist citizens who allow their political leaders to disarm them.
